Claudia López became an overnight sensation after being elected as Bogota’s first female and lesbian mayor on Sunday. López beat out runner-up Carlos Galán by 2.3% with over 1.1 million votes, marking a significant victory not just for her personally, but also for the women and LGBTQ community in Colombia and all of Latin America.

In her victory speech, López states, “This is the day of the woman. We knew that only by uniting could we win. We did that. We united, we won and we made history!”

Colombia and much of Latin America still have ways to go when it comes to accepting the LGBTQ community. Many that associate with this demographic constantly face public harassment through verbal abuse and physical threats. With López setting an example and leading the LGBTQ community in politics, perhaps attitudes might change.

Congratulations to Ms. Claudia López!
