Can You Earn Citizenship As An Undocumented Immigrant?
Jose Antonio Vargas came to the U.S. at age 12, not knowing that he was in fact smuggled into the country illegally. Being undocumented played an emotional role in Vargas’s upbringing and caused him to struggle with maintaining healthy friendships and relationships. Although he was raised by his grandparents, who were naturalized citizens, Vargas was never granted American citizenship. After becoming an accomplished journalist, Vargas revealed himself to be an undocumented immigrant in a 2011 essay in The New York Times Magazine. Ever since, he has been a vocal advocate for pathways to citizenship, such as the DREAM Act. In this video by The Atlantic, he goes on to explain why the concept of “earning” citizenship is problematic.
