I Say Ban Assault Weapons Now
Despite what some so-called leaders might have you believe, nearly 70% of all American voters support legislation banning assault-style weapons. A new poll by Politico found that 86% percent of democrat voters support an assault rifle ban following the latest attacks by white supremacist gunmen on civilians, while 55% of GOP voters said they also supported legislation that would outlaw the access to assault-style weapons.
Assault-style weapons that have been banned in the United States before include the following:
And I ask you, in all seriousness, what civilian has any use for these type of weapons other than to use them in mass shootings against other civilians?
As I already mentioned, all of these type of weapons were already banned in the United States with the passing of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban that lasted from 1994 – 2004. It prohibited the manufacture of such guns for civilians, and also prohibited the manufacture of the bullets for such guns for civilians.
The number of mass shootings per year has gone up 200 percent since this ban expired in the United States. From 1900 – 2004, we experienced an average of 1.5 mass shootings per year.
As of August 5th, 2019, we have had 255 mass shootings in the first 217 days of the year. That’s more mass shootings than days in this year.
Each year that passes without an assault weapons ban sees an increase in fatalities due to mass shootings:
With most weapons obtained legally in this country with its current policies:
… with a good third of the weapons used being those that would be outlawed by the Federal Weapons Ban had we not failed to renew the policy:
So I say to you again: what civilian needs these assault-style weapons, except to enact mass shootings on the people of this country?
We are powerful, we are numerous, and we can take control of the conversation on assault weapons in this country.
Let’s join and together let Congress know that we no longer wish to live in fear of mass shootings enacted by lone white gun men with access to weapons that should not be on the market.
We will no longer stay silent, and we will no longer accept this version of reality where fascist white supremacists can hold the American population in fear of violent attack. The tide needs to turn, and it starts now.
