Latinx Heritage Month Feature: Sylvia Mendez
Segregation will always be an incredibly shameful part of American History. You’ve probably heard of the groundbreaking Brown v. Board of Education case that resulted in the desegregation of public schools across the U.S. But did you know that seven years prior, Mendez v. Westminister took place in California, arguing that Mexican American students should not be forced into segregated Mexican schools? The person behind this case is a 9 year-old Latinx girl named Sylvia Mendez. Check out this video by Bese on how she helped end segregation in California and eventually went on to receive The Presidential Medal Of Freedom.
