Latinx Heritage Month Feature: Domingo Liotta
Of all the incredible things Latinxs have contributed to the world, Domingo Liotta‘s first total artificial heart is definitely one of the coolest. In 1969, Liotta’s artificial heart was successfully used to keep a patient alive for 64 hours, before a real transplant could be secured. This was the first time in history it was discovered that artifical hearts could be used temporarily for people on waiting lists. Liotta went on to pioneer open heart surgery and patent 12 inventions across Argentina, The U.S. and France. His first artificial heart is available to see in The Smithsonian Institute of Washington.
