For-Profit Prisons To End in Denver

Denver City Council member Candi CdeBaca is helping fight the controversial business of for-profit prisons. She convinced the council to vote in favor of ending contracts with two prison firms: CoreCivic and The GEO Group. These two firms also run the majority of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s detention centers. Yes, those detention centers.

The City Council was convinced that by supporting these two firms, they were also complicit in the injustices carried out by ICE. CdeBaca worked very hard to build a compelling arguments. She also brought in many experts and opponents of the two firms to testify and/or speak out against them. It worked.

It’s not all sunshine with this decision, though. The companies also run some halfway houses in the city, and those residents will need continued support as to not end up finishing their terms in prison, or relapsing back into crime or drugs.
