#3Mexicos: It’s an Entirely Different Country
Earlier today, Fox News ran a graphic during their Fox & Friends segment that said: “Trump Cuts U.S. aid to 3 Mexican Countries”.
The experience was reminiscent of a very popular scene from the film Clueless.
Apparently, Fox News didn’t get the geography memo and #CentralAmericanTwitter clapped back:
For those of us from the countries in question; Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, it’s times like these when we are reminded of the longstanding erasure that our communities have faced. It is also an indicator of the overall lack in nuanced discussions that surround our cultural experience.
Centroamericanos continue to find themselves between the rock and hard places along the US/Mexico border, in detention centers, battling gangs and corrupt governments, as well as struggling with a staggering number of USCIS cases. Many, are also wedged in between the cracks created by Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
“We had an inaccurate graphic on screen while talking about this very story. We just want to be clear, the funding is being cut off to the three Central American Countries. We apologize for the error.”Ed Henry, Fox News Host
While Ed Henry, co-host of Fox & Friends, issued an apology, it is clear that dog whistles such as these have been a mainstay of the Trump era. Despite the rhetoric, solidarity within our community continues to grow in strength.
In this political climate, one can only hope that rather than resorting to trivialities, our nation can begin to start asking the difficult questions. What is truly going on in Central America? What will be the lasting effects of these foreign policy decisions?
The answers are necessary if we are going to move towards improvement, as many people’s lives depend on it.
