Judge Rules Officer Pantaleo to Be Fired
During Wednesday night’s democratic debate, Mayor Bill de Blasio, abstained from offering an opinion on whether the police officer responsible for the death of Eric Garner should be fired. Despite protestors having interrupted his opening statements that evening by shouting “Fire Pantaleo!”
On Friday morning he again declined to do so, while reaffirming his solidarity with the Garner family, even as the news broke that an NYPD administrative judge announced their recommendation to fire the officer.
This is a major step in a long and drawn out process that has kept justice elusive. For those affected directly by Mr. Garner’s murder, it’s possible this breakthrough could be the beginning of a shift in narrative. Ultimately, the decision belongs to Commissioner O’Neill.
