Beauty Pageant Gives Convicts Second Chance
It’s a bleak world for inmates serving life sentences for crimes such as murder, fraud, and drug trafficking. Yet, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, female convicts have a chance to look forward to something truly unique while in jail: the annual Miss Talavera Bruce Beauty Pageant.
Held at the tightly controlled Instituto Penal Talavera prison, this beauty pageant is a highly contested event that chooses only ten participants out of the hundreds of female inmates. On this special day of exemption, pageant contestants are judged on their beauty and attitude instead of the crimes they’ve committed. It’s a rare opportunity for these inmates to show off their self worth and validate the goodness that still exists in them despite their past, allowing them the chance to move forward with the possibility of redemption.
