In light of the tragedies that took place in El Paso, Dayton, and Gilroy, Lady Gaga did what politicians couldn’t: last Friday, the singer / songwriter pledged to fund 162 school projects in the three respective cities.

“My heart goes out to those who were taken from us too soon and to their families, loved ones and communities who are left to grieve,” she writes in a public post on Facebook. “I want to channel my confusion, frustration, and fury into hope [through the donations I intend to pledge].”

Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation will work closely with DonorsChoose.org to execute the funding necessary for all of the classrooms. 125 classrooms in El Paso, 23 in Gilroy, and 14 in Dayton will benefit from this thoughtful partnership.

The recent mass shootings across these three towns had occurred consecutively during a one-week period. The El Paso shooter had made explicit intention to harm people of Hispanic decent — a searingly direct target on the Latinx community.

Gaga hopes her actions will help inspire young people to “work together and bring their dreams to life” amidst these hurtful times.

“In loving memory of the victims of the tragic shootings,” she concludes.
