With the deadly shootout in Culiacán still visibly in the rearview mirror, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) held a press conference this morning to discuss the firefight that led to the release of El Chapo’s son, Ovidio Guzmán López.
Suffice to say that Mexican Twitter has taken it upon themselves to troll their government over the melee using the affectionate hashtag #AMLOestamoscontigo, ironically.
The overwhelming amount of critique came after AMLO defended his decision to release Guzmán López once it was clear the government was sorely outmatched by the Sinaloa cartel.
According to the Associated Press, AMLO said:
“The capture of one criminal cannot be worth more than the lives of people. This decision was made to protect citizens. …You cannot fight fire with fire.”Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexican President
The violence had endangered local residents as vehicles and a gas station were set ablaze and massive smoke clouds filled the air. Cartel gunmen drove for hours patrolling the nearby areas. One truck had a machine gun mounted on top.
The event, as well as the fallout, has left Mexican citizens aghast.
During the press conference, when AMLO was asked if President Donald Trump had placed an extradition order for El Chapo’s son. AMLO hesitated, then moved on to another question. The positioning language from the Mexican government seems dead set on defending its strategy. However, it’s quite obvious to the people of Mexico, and anyone watching, that the situation is clearly beyond the president’s control.
