VOGUE Mexico: Yalitza Aparicio Martínez Honors The Cover Of 2019
Alfonso Cuarón has done it again. He has given us another great movie that we will be talking about for years. If you haven’t seen it, go to Netflix and prepare yourself for this beautiful and complex journey. In an interview with Yuriria Sierra from Imagen Noticias, Cuarón had this to say, “[ROMA] is as much about families as it is about the country and the complexity of the perverse relationship there is in our country between race and class.”
Having Yalitza Aparicio Martinez on the cover of VOGUE Mexico is such a breath of fresh air. It’s a symbol of what 2019 might bring: more inclusion, better representation, less stereotypes, and absolute support for one another. People’s reaction to the January cover has not disappointed; the outpour of celebration and pride has us doing our happy dance. It was about time the indigenous community be represented and portrayed on mainstream media. We all want to see ourselves in what we read, what we see, what we listen to. Am I right?

I’m so excited to wake up and see an indigenous Mexican woman on the cover of @VogueMexico… This is iconic. This is México. Let’s keep this door open and celebrate inclusion in our industry and across sectors. It’s about time! Sending my love to Yalitza Aparicio!
In her interview with VOGUE, Aparicio said it perfectly, “My skin, very Mexican, very Oaxaqueñan, very human, the color of my land and the diversity of its colors. […] Certain stereotypes are being broken: that only people with a certain profile can aspire to be actresses or be on the cover of magazines. Other faces of Mexico are now being recognized. It is something that makes me so happy and proud of my roots.”
Thank you, Cuarón. ROMA has finally given a platform for the millions of unseen and unheard. Do you have a story similar to ROMA?
