The Trouble with the Census

Are you mixed or biracial (OK, yes, we agree race is a social construct, but stick with us for a minute)? When you fill out the census, what do you put? Do you choose one side with a slight sense of guilt? Do you choose “other” and get frustrated because even a piece of paper is othering you? Is it weird putting yourself down as “white” when you consider yourself a person of color? We dug up this episode of MTV’s Decoded (from 2016, but still so so relevant!) for a quick refresher on how to break down the problematic aspects of the census and the complexities of being Latinx.

Reports indicate the upcoming 2020 census could potentially contain a question about citizenship. How will that even work?
