The Little Mermaid Gets A Whole New Look

It seems we’re fresh out of fairy tales because Hollywood has decided to take the classics and re-make them all as live-action blockbusters. Did you guys see the incredible cast photos for “The Lion King” published this week?

You’ll easily see why its re-release is being dubbed, ‘Beyoncé Presents: The Lion King.’

Following these epic images another exciting announcement hit the internet. One half of sister duo, Chloe x Halle, R&B singer Halle Bailey will play Ariel in the live-action adaptation of “The Little Mermaid.”

Production has also tapped “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to compose new music for the film along with Alan Menken. But don’t worry original songs from the 1989 animated hit will be included as well.

Halle will be the first black woman cast as a traditionally white princess in the Disney canon and the decision was not received without racist backlash and a major media outlet referring to Bailey as “colored.”

It’s clear we have a long road ahead towards progress, representation and equity among races. But we could not be happier for the young starlet or more anxious to hear her sing “Part of Your World,” sending a resounding message to women and girls of color that they are seen and recognized. I cannot say what this would have meant to me, as a young Ariel-obsessed nine-year-old.

    I’m so excited

The Little Mermaid is going to be ruined. You can’t have a colored actress play Ariel when she is traditionally white- and that is not racist. If Disney were to cast a white girl to play Tiana everyone would go crazy.

I agree Cassidy it I might not go see it now! And I love Ariel! One Of my favorite movies with red hair and blue eyes ! I’ll wait to rent it maybe!

No that’s not true…. it just wouldn’t make sense for the mermaid being so extremely pale. She would burn every time she is in direct sunlight

She is a mermaid that is off the coast and so naturally she would have that skin tone…. due to the UV rays magnified by the surface of the ocean
