“Songland” Is The Kind of Music Show We Need
If you’re like me, and love seeing behind-the-scenes of the music industry but have zero musical talent, then I have the perfect show for you. I recently came across Songland, which sheds light on the real warriors of the music industry: the songwriters.
The show has 3 prolific judges: Ryan Tedder known for his impeccable work with Beyoncé, Adele, Taylor Swift, Jonas Brothers, One Republic, and more. Ester Dean, who famously partnered with Rihanna on songs like “Rude Boy” and “S&M,” and Shane McAnnally, known for his songwriting skills and work with Kacey Musgraves.
The show brings in aspiring songwriters to perform their songs before a panel of judges, and one famous guest judge (including Jonas Brothers, John Legend, Kelsea Ballerini and Black Eyed Peas). After having the songwriters perform, the guest judge chooses the three songs they think they could record and the panel calls back the songwriters. Each artist is then paired with a guest artist to retool the song and perform it once again for a live audience. Finally, the artist chooses their favorite to record as theirs!
The most fun aspect of the show is that you actually see these titans producing the song, changing the music, adding harmonies and more. Here are the amazing songs that have been birthed from it:
