These Gamers Play All Night Long For A Good Cause

Crowd shot of video game marathon Games Done Quick

Your favorite video game charity marathon returns! Last Summer we highlighted the fantastic people involved in Summer Games Done Quick. On Jan 5, its sister event, Awesome Games Done Quick, began.  #gottagofast

What is AGDQ? Glad you asked! For the last 10 years, Games Done Quick marathons have gathered speedrunners (people who beat games as fast as possible) for 24/7 marathons to raise money for various charities. AGDQ 2020 will be raising money for the Prevent Cancer Foundation. Donations come from viewers watching all across the globe, at all hours of the day and night. To date, across all of their events, more than $22 million has been raised for various charities and causes.

You can peep the schedule here. No matter where you are in the world, the schedule will display your local time that each run starts. Here are the highlights:

  • Adventure Island 2 by TheMexicanRunner  – 1/7 at 10am PST.
TheMexicanRunner is one of the best in the world at the 8-bit generation of games.
  • Final Fantasy VIII by Tojju, Muttski, Luzbelheim – 1/7 at 9pm PST.
RPG fans, don’t miss this one. A 30+ hour game done in 9 hours. The optimization is out of control.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 100% NSR by ZFG – 1/8 at 2:30pm PST.
ZFG is known for beasting OOT 100% in under 4 hours. NSR stands for No Source Requirement, so with this version he will use different tricks and glitches to fill out his inventory in crazy ways.
  • Awful Block by various runners – 1/8 at 9:30pm.
The Awful Block is often one of the funniest parts of the event, with terrible games being played. This year’s block includes such masterpieces as Wild Animal Sports Day, Mega Man 3 on DOS, and Normy’s Beach Babe-O-Rama. Here’s a taste of a recent Awful Block.
  • Mario 64 Randomizer by Puncayshun, 360Chrism, Simply – 1/10 at 7:30pm PST.
Randomizers have become popular over the last couple of years, with A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and now Mario 64 getting the treatment. Watch this eternal classic get a makeover as stars and levels are randomized throughout the game.
  • Legend of Zelda – A Link To The Past Crowd Control Randomizer by andy – 1/11 at 12:05pm PST.
Another randomizer, only this time YOU can control what happens in the game through donations! Want to give him arrows? Donate a little. Want instant death for Link? Donate a lot!
  • Mario Maker 2 Blind Relay Race by various runners – 1/11 at 3:30pm PST. Mario Maker relay races are super entertaining to watch. Some of the best runners will team up to race in levels they have never seen before. The skill level for these is through the roof! Here’s a past Mario Maker Relay Race to whet your appetite.

So check out the stream anytime during the week! And if you are feeling charitable, make a donation. Any amount helps!
