Breaking Up With Your Celebrity Crush

Have you ever scrolled through your feed MINDING YOUR OWN BUSINESS, when suddenly you see them? Pictures of your celebrity crush snuggling up with someone that is definitely not you?
It can be crushing (pun intended).
As someone who just got #dumped TWICE by both of her celebrity crushes within the past two weeks, I thought I would share some of my coping mechanisms in the hopes of helping someone else that might be going through the same thing.
Step 1: Get Away From the Internet
Before you do anything else, do yourself a favor.
STOP. LOOKING. AT. THE. PHOTOS.
It’s not going to help you in any way and will probably only make you feel worse. So just stop, take a moment to breathe, and step away from the internet.
Step 2: Emotion Is Not Weakness
If you need to cry, do it. Let it out. It’s better to release your emotions privately than break down in public in front of a bunch of strangers. And if you need to reach out to friends for support, don’t hesitate.
Step 3: Check Yourself
Before you let your sadness turn into rage, take a step back and check in with reality. While you are a fan of said celebrity, you are also a STRANGER. They don’t owe you anything and just because you had a crush on them doesn’t make them obligated to “wait for you.” Please do not send hate to your (former?) crush and their new partner.
Step 4: Lean Into Music
Sometimes we all just need a little music that matches our mood. Maybe you’ll listen to it while you work, or maybe you’ll listen to it while lying down. Both choices are totally valid. For this, I recommend searching for breakup playlists since they’re the most relatable in this situation. I mean, someone just broke up with you on the internet! It’s understandable that you have some feelings.
Some of my personal favorites:
- “Shout Out To My Ex” by Little Mix
- “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera
- “Stronger” by Britney Spears
Another gem I recently rediscovered is BeyoncĂ©’s “Best Thing I Never Had.” This one especially helps since you technically never “had” your celebrity crush in the first place.
Step 5: Don’t Forget Who You Are
As you’re going through the motions please remember: YOU ARE FIERCE AND INDEPENDENT AND DON’T NEED TO RELY ON ANYONE FOR YOUR HAPPINESS BECAUSE YOU ARE AMAZING.
Did this help you in any way? What happened when you found out your celebrity crush is no longer single?
