Yordan Álvarez Is Unanimous AL Rookie of the Year
Cuban-born Yordan Álvarez helped take the Houston Astros to the World Series this year, and is now the Rookie of the Year. The DH and outfielder only played about 2/3 of the season, but batted .313 and had 27 dingers, which was over 1/4 of his hits! Tack on 78 RBIs, and you can see why he got the unanimous nod for ROY.
Before coming to MLB, he played for two seasons in the Cuban National Series. He then defected and moved to Haiti, and signed with the LA Dodgers as in international free agent. He did a couple of seasons in the minors, and in June of 2019 the Astros picked up his contract and promoted him to the majors.
In his first five games, he hit 4 home runs(!) and had 7 in his first 12. So imagine what his numbers would have been if he played a full season! We wish him the best of luck in the coming years, and expect amazing things from him.
