John Legend Rewrites ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ to Make It #MeToo-Friendly

Some Christmas hits age beautifully, and some just don’t.
In the #MeToo world, songs like “Baby It’s Cold Outside” have become a bit of a controversy after gender quality advocates viewed the song’s message as a story of a “date rape.” Feminists have argued that the song degrades the woman’s choice to stay as the man seems to push her into a corner with no options.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, John Legend announced that he and songwriter Natasha Rothwell altered the lyrics to the famous holiday song to appeal to modern audiences, citing that he has rewritten parts of the song to includes lines like, “It’s your body, and your choice.” Legend recorded the new song with his fellow The Voice coach Kelly Clarkson.
Vanity Fair notes that the new rendition will still be just as “fun and swinging as the original” while still keeping its overall feel “genuine.”
“What will my friends think…” asks Clarkson.
“I think they should rejoice,” Legend responds.
“…if I have one more drink?”
“It’s your body, and your choice.”
