How To Properly Cover Pride
With Pride Month upon us, it’s inevitable that we’ll see large corporations jumping on the Pride train simple because it’s #trendy but not show any care to properly giving back to the Queer Community.
To confront this, many organizations have taken it upon themselves to ensure that there’s an accurate representation from the media coverage of major events and festivals.
One major force behind this initiative is the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). They tackle tough issues, strive to shape the public narrative, as well as spark dialogue that leads to cultural change. GLAAD works hard to preserve all that has been accomplished by the LGBTQI+ movement, and creates a world where everyone can live the life they love.
After plenty of cases where companies talking about pride resulted in misinformation, GLAAD decided to create a press kit for journalists that cover a range of topics: from how to properly cover Pride to what kind of images to select for editorials. They even suggest topics on what to write during Pride month.
