The growing decent in Chile has lead to violent protests and a mass call for President Sebastian Pinera’s resignation. Pinera has yet to take action on submitting his resignation. However, he announced that Chile would no longer be hosting the COP 25 Climate Summit or the APEC Summit. The Chilean government cited the protests as their reason for canceling.

The United Nations Framework Convention established their COP Climate Summit in 95’ to address climate change from a worldwide perspective. The decision-making body of the convention meets every year to ensure that actions are being undertaken to prevent further damage to the planet. Chile must pick up the pieces and do right by its people if the government wants to continue being part of the global climate conversation.

The United Nations decided that Madrid, Spain would host this year’s COP25 Climate Summit instead of Santiago, Chile. Youth climate activists who committed to eco traveling to the summit in Chile must now turn around and head to Madrid. Popular youth activist Greta Thunberg traveled by boat and electric car through to South America before learning she had to head back to Europe.
