Locals Outraged at Tourists Visiting ‘Joker’ Steps in Bronx
If you’ve seen the new ‘Joker’ movie starring Joaquin Phoenix, then you’ll remember the now iconic scene of the Joker jovially dancing down those long flight of steps.
Since the movie’s release, it really didn’t take long for the descending concrete pieces to become a full-blown tourist attraction. Fans from Brazil, Sweden, and other parts of the world have flocked into this narrow area in the Bronx to solidify their own ‘Joker’ moment and probably, to post later on Instagram.
Hosts Desus and Mero from Desus and Mero on Showtime were quick to express their annoyance at the numerous acts of “stupidity” they have witnessed on the steps.
“Who here is from the Bronx? Who here hates these steps? Who here has almost died in the winter going down these steps when they don’t shovel them?” they ask their audience.
Locals admit they were not prepared for the 132 steps to attract tourists around the world, who either come dressed up in a full Joker costume or perform their abbreviated version of the Joker dance, or even both.
It’s actually not the first time a flight of stairs have been glorified because of a blockbuster movie. Remember the flight of stairs in the climatic scene of The Exorcist? Or the stairs from Rocky at the Philadelphia Art Museum?
Guess it’s the Bronx’s turn for now until a future film finds a new set of stairs to glamorize…
